Nutrition Book of the Month

Nutrition Book of the Month

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am not a big fan of modern medicine, as I am not sure whether a lot of the medicine prescribed are really needed (but this is a discussion for another topic!). In the process of finding out more about self-healing, and how to avoid taking medicine where it is not necessarily needed, my interest for Ayurveda has increased.  I am fascinated by the fact that it is such an ancient art of self healing, with so many simple and easy to follow rules.

There are many books about Ayurveda out there (and NO, I have not read them all!), but the one that I personally find great is called "The Ayurvedic Cookbook" by Amadea Morningstar (with Urmila Desai). Besides the many different recipes, I like this book because it gives a great understanding of the Ayurvedic type of diet:

  • it gives a nice summary of the history of Ayurveda
  • it goes in great detail of helping the reader find his constitution (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), which in turn will help him determine the nutritional needs he has
  • it explains how our digestion and digestion organs work, as well as how to combine and prepare foods
  • the importance of the chakras and the nutritional changes one has to make
  • the importance of seasonal food
  • guidance in how best to cook (for best possible results)
  • seasonal menu plans for the three different constitutions

The one thing that I don't like about this book, is that it is a lot of text in small font size. There are also no pictures of the meals (or illustrations throughout the book), and I personally need to have this in a cook book. But as this book is so much more than just a Ayurvedic recipe book, I think it is ok:)

I have to yet implement more Ayurvedic meals in our daily meal plan, but I would love to hear your thoughts on the whole philosophy behind Ayurvedic diet........and what is your favourite Ayurvedic recipe and cookbook.

Stay healthy
